Editorial Assessment
An editorial assessment is an incredibly valuable first look at your manuscript from an experienced editor, assessing its strengths, weaknesses and market potential. However, an editorial assessment can be directed in whatever way you see fit. I’m happy to read with my mind towards whether or not your book will catch the attention of agents and editors, but I’m also happy to read with a focus on whether the jokes are landing or whether a particular character’s arc is well drawn enough. The purpose of an assessment is to give your writing dedicated attention from a trained industry professional, and to provide you with feedback to make the book better.
I am happy to provide editorial assessments for novels, short stories, memoirs, or any non-fiction project.
Developmental Edit
Developmental edits are far and away the thing I’m most passionate about in the publishing process. I love nothing more than getting into the nitty-gritty of an author’s writing, and making sure everything is working as hard as it can. This isn’t a copyedit, looking at grammar etc., but rather focusing on the book at a structural level – what’s currently working, and what might need further attention.
Line Edit
A line edit involves an editor going through your book, sentence by sentence, with intensely focused attention on your writing style. This will involve highlighting any images that could be working harder, any awkward piece of syntax, or a change in tone that feels inconsistent with the larger piece of work. This is different from copyediting, which is a largely objective and technical edit, highlighting definitive spelling and grammar errors. Instead, a line edit is about making your prose as punchy as possible, drawing out the uniqueness of your voice in every line.
